About Us
We are Marija Prokofjeva and Andrey Khrustalev, students at Riga Technical University. We love to see how our city changes, and we are especially interested in how history is reflected in it. We both love Latvia and believe that it is important to understand not only what is happening today, but also how the past shapes the present. This is where our project began.
One day we asked ourselves a simple question: why are some streets in Riga called the way they are? Why do some names remain, while others disappear? And also – who decides whose name is worthy of a street? With these questions in mind, we delved into the history of street renaming in Riga from 1990 to the present day, especially after major events such as the restoration of independence and the war in Ukraine.
This is how our joint project was born – a map that shows how and why street names changed in Riga. We collected data, studied archives, worked with maps, looked for historical context and tried to present it all in a simple, understandable and beautiful form. This site is the result of our work, and we are really proud of it.
We are not professional historians or developers, but we are curious, caring young people who care about telling important things. We hope that our project will be interesting not only to researchers or students, but also to everyone who loves Riga and wants to understand it better.
Thank you for visiting. We hope you enjoy it!
